The Kilmallie Singers began in 1970 as a small choir for Kilmallie Church, Caol, (near Fort William) and consisted of 2 sopranos, 2 altos, 1 tenor, 1 bass, and the conductor/accompanist. Over the years it has grown into a community choir with around 65 members. Since its inception, the choir has been conducted by
Heather Moore, ex-Principal Teacher of Music at Lochaber High School, Fort William. Since Heather's tragic and untimely death in July 2006, the task of conductor has fallen on the able and illustrious Andrew Simpson.
The singers rehearse on Thursday evenings between September and April, accompanied by the popular and talentedJennifer Skene, and their aim is to enjoy singing together and to have FUN. They have performed a wide range of music, from classic choral works to the Beatles, to appreciative audiences in Lochaber.
The Choir has an ongoing association with the Corran Singers from Lochgilphead, recently uniting to perform the choruses from Carmen and some choruses from Verdi operas at their 2006 Spring Concert, and more recently to perform Mozart's Requiem at their 2007 Spring Concert and Brahms' Nänie at the 2008 Spring Concert. This association means that, not only can both choirs enjoy singing together to make a much bigger sound, but also (after months of hard rehearsal) have the opportunity to perform in both Fort William and Ardrishaig/Lochgilphead.
